The # 1 rule for creating a rich urban environment is being re-created in Sweet Auburn: nice infill housing for residents to live in the area and businesses catering to those residents; disposable incomes also help. The interactions build energy and the area comes alive!
Here is an example: While walking around the the West Side of Atlanta on Howell Mill Road in 2002 the area was then in urban blight—interesting old dilapidated industrial buildings, but dead and gray with cracked sidewalks and no observable energetic life. Thesis Committee Member Renee Kemp-Rotan mentioned that the cure was “lots of bodies” living in the area. Sure enough slowly but surely over the years, in 2025 the West Side has literally 1000’s of residences and the area is alive and awake with people enjoying multi-dimensional urban life.
